NTT Communications Shares Expertise at Open Networking Summit, Extends Leadership in SDN Research and Implementation

Premier event features three NTT Com leaders and breakthrough gateway demo

New York, NY and Santa Clara, CA – April 15, 2013 – NTT Communications Corporation (NTT Com), a wholly owned subsidiary of NTT (NYSE: NTT), today announced details of its participation in this week’s Open Networking Summit (ONS) in Santa Clara, CA, highlighting the company’s continued leadership in software-defined networking (SDN).  Three NTT Com executives will deliver talks addressing aspects of SDN strategy, operations and development.  NTT Com will also demonstrate the operational efficiencies of a gateway to the Enterprise Cloud platform it launched in 2012.

As the first service provider in the world to embrace SDN and the OpenFlow communications interface, NTT Com launched its SDN-based Enterprise Cloud in June 2012 via data centers in Japan and Hong Kong.  With the addition of data centers in Singapore, England, and Virginia and California in the United States, the Enterprise Cloud became available on a global basis in February 2013.  Within this spring, NTT Com’s Enterprise Cloud will include SDN in eight countries and ten locations.  Clients have used the self-manageable Enterprise Cloud platform to flexibly extend their own data centers, gaining cost-optimized and secure compute capacity as a result.

“NTT Communications’ Enterprise Cloud is gaining traction in several sectors, especially among global manufacturers looking to consolidate systems and assets,” said Mr. Yukio Ito, Senior Vice President of Service Infrastructure at NTT Com. “Global enterprises continue to look to NTT Com as a partner of choice for real-world cloud transformation, relying on our foundation of advisory, migration, operational and management services.”

“Successful enterprise clouds will need to provide flexible connectivity at a speed and price point that mirrors the rapid and low-cost delivery of virtual machines,” said Caroline Chappell, Senior Analyst, Heavy Reading, a division of UBM Tech.  “Current approaches to data center networking don’t scale and are expensive because of the level of manual configuration involved.  NTT Com’s early adoption of SDN gives it the opportunity to transform customer experience of cloud services, as well as the operational costs associated with running them.  NTT Com is therefore in a strong position to lead the global market for cloud services going forward.”

On Wednesday, April 17, during a plenary session at ONS, Mr. Ito will discuss the impact of SDN on enterprise cloud computing, NTT Com’s creation of a cloud-VPN gateway and virtual extensions of the LAN, and the future of SDN development.  In two additional talks at ONS, Mr. Nayan Naik, Director of Product Strategy for NTT America, will present use cases and a high-level overview of NTT Com’s Enterprise Cloud; and on Tuesday, April 16, Mr. Ichiro Fukuda, Associate Director of SDN and Cloud Technology at NTT Innovation Institute Inc. (NTT I3), NTT’s new R&D center in San Mateo, California, will speak to software developers working in the new environment created by SDN’s separation of control and data planes.

At its booth, NTT Com will demo (i) a gateway between its Arcstar Universal One VPN service and Enterprise Cloud and (ii) a customer portal for the Enterprise Cloud showing its self-manageable SDN platform.  A path-breaking model and use case of operational efficiency for service providers, the gateway is designed to bridge NTT Com’s Enterprise Cloud with its MPLS-based VPN, which reaches more than 150 countries worldwide.  Along with NTT Com’s seamless and on-premise LAN extension and numbering scheme, this gateway is in a technical verification phase, with launch planned for mid-2013.

This year’s ONS arrives as interest in understanding SDN and network functions virtualization (NFV) accelerates and the industry looks to pioneers such as NTT Com for continued leadership.  A non-profit event created by the founders of SDN to share and explore key developments and deployments in the world of SDN and OpenFlow, ONS is the premier event to meet peers, exchange ideas and knowledge and discuss real problems in need of solutions.  Last year’s event drew representatives from more than 250 companies and 26 different countries.

NTT Com is a Visionary Sponsor of ONS.  NTT Com also is a leader of the Open Networking Foundation (ONF), a non-profit consortium dedicated to the transformation of networking through the development and standardization of SDN architecture, including the OpenFlow protocol standard.  Mr. Ito represents NTT Com as a member of the ONF Board of Directors.
