NTT America Handles Growing International Internet Traffic with Juniper Networks T1600 Routers

NTT America Increases Performance and Scalability of Global IP Network to Keep Pace with Escalating Demand for New Services

New York, NY – NTT America, a wholly owned U.S. subsidiary of NTT Communications Corporation (NTT Com) and a global IP network services provider, today announced it has enhanced the capacity of its Global IP Network, one of the largest dedicated Internet backbone networks in the world, by installing Juniper Networks T1600 core multi-terabit routers. Compelling new applications such as IPTV and multiplay services have dramatically increased subscriber demand over the last year and have been instrumental in the decision to upgrade the backbone network.

“The T1600 provides us with a competitive advantage by improving network performance and creating more value for our customers, as well as meeting our commitment to protect the environment,” said Kazuhiro Gomi, CTO of NTT America and vice president of the NTT Com Global IP Network. “We were able to cut power consumption by as much as 20 percent and doubled the network capacity without any increase in datacenter space requirements.”

NTT Communications Global IP Network is a global Tier 1 Internet backbone serving the US, Europe, Oceania, Japan and Asia. NTT Com has been continuously upgrading its global Tier 1 IP backbone in response to customer demand for bandwidth intensive applications such as broadband networks, content delivery networks, Web 2.0 content, and rich ecommerce properties. In addition, NTT Com has fully upgraded its global backbone to run both the current Internet Protocol, IPv4, and the new Internet Protocol, IPv6. NTT Com provides IPv6 Gateway services that are available globally and allow enterprises to connect to the world’s only commercial-grade Global Tier One IPv6 Backbone operating in four continents and serving thousands of customers. The NTT Com Global IP Network (AS 2914) is registered to NTT America.

“Juniper is pleased to provide NTT America with a high-performance network infrastructure that will enable it to quickly deploy innovative, high-quality services, at scale with significant operational savings,” said Opher Kahane, general manager and senior vice president, High End Systems Business Unit, Juniper Networks. “The T1600 routers, in combination with NTT America’s existing T640 routers and JUNOS® software, will help accelerate service model innovation and lower operational costs, enabling NTT America to extract maximum value from its network assets.”

The T1600 multi-terabit core router enables service providers to increase network capacity in line with escalating service demands without adding incremental systems to the network. As the industry’s highest-capacity, most energy efficient single-chassis core router, the T1600 enables service providers to monetize their networks by speeding new service deployment, delivering a superior end-user experience and maximizing existing T-series investments. All Juniper Networks T-series routers run on JUNOS software, a single source operating system that enables consistent operations, unparalleled network scale, superior interoperability and increased service flexibility.
